| Barn Owl |
| About this Artwork: While walking near Mt. Monadnock in NH one late evening I followed the hoots of an owl and was lucky to shoot a very bad photo of a barn owl with my cell phone. Fortunately my textile work is better than my photography, and I recreated the shot in an odd selection of fabrics that captures the color tones and light of the evening. The sky still had that sunset-and-cyan lightness, while the shadows flattened the light. The background of this piece is a beautiful batik, with free-motion quilting giving texture to every blue element. The tree is deep hand-dyed and printed cottons with light quilting to give form to the bark. The owl is a funky mix of flannel, batik, hand-dye, and prints Gallery-wrapped on a stretched canvas frame, wired for hanging. |
