| About this Artwork: . With plans to do a series of New York City pieces, I spent a day snapping pics around Manhattan a few months ago. This composition captures the contrasting elements of the city, from the stark newer architecture in glass and concrete to the older brownstone and brick neighborhoods that struggle to maintain their position in an ever-changing city. The buildings are fused applique using cotton print, batik and hand-dyed fabrics, with satin stitching. I used variegated black and white thread for the modern buildings, and solids in warmer tones for the neighborhoods. I'm particularly fond of the effect of using shiny white rayon thread in the windows of the center brownstone, to reflect the modern side of the city. The border is grey hand-dyed cotton, gallery wrapped around a stretched canvas frame, wired for hanging like a painting. |
