| Decorated Elephants |
| About this Artwork: Inspired by M.C. Escher's work in tessellation illustrations, the elephants are drafted in a simple translational symmetry. I pieced the blocks, using quilting to give each elephant more structure. Always fascinated by the many ways the people of India ceremoniously dress elephants, I embellished my elephants with a wide variety of items including: organic cotton, genuine turquoise, tiger's eye (crocidolite), Australian jasper, amethyst, red agate, leopard jasper, unakite, red tourmaline, sodalite, wood, veriscite, moss agate, oyster shell, scallop shell, and freshwater pearls. I left four of the elephants undecorated, in a triangular pattern, to better balance the emphasis of the tessellation with the decoration. The front and borders are raw silk. The batting and backing are organic cotton. Finished with a sewn-in hanging sleeve, to hang on a decorative rod like a tapestry. |
