| . About this Artwork: . Contrary to its appearance, this piece began as an experiment with the Japanese sumi-e style of ink drawing. I drew several sketches attempting to capture the essence of a figure, and tried to use fewer than 7 lines. Something about this form also reminded me of Peter Maxx's Statue of Liberty paintings, so I abandoned the ink and made my lady in bright colored fabric applique outlines to contrast on a black and white background. I used acrylic fabric paint to colorize the white portions of the fabric print within the outlines of the figure. I free-motion stiched geometric forms into the background, to mimic architectural details. The piece was bound as an art quilt, and included a sewn in hanging sleeve on the back for a decorative rod. |
